Chichen Itza
Our final stop on our trip around Mexico are the pyramids at Chichen Itza, located deep in the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza was built by the Maya people. The Maya people are probably the best known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. They originated in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C. and rose to prominence around 250 A.D. Like the other pyramids located in Mexico, Chichen Itza was also a large city during its prominence. The largest building located there would have to be " El Castillo" , also known as The Castle in English. It is located directly in the center of all the other pyramids, as you can see on the map. It was built sometime between the 11th and 13the century as a temple to the god "Kukulcan". The pyramid itself with the temple on top is only 98 feet high, so not nearly as high as the pyramid at Teotihuacan, yet still impressive.
